Drought

Our Governor has officially declared us to be in drought conditions.  For some reason it took him quite a while to do this, and still there are no restrictions on water usage being imposed, at least here.  The reservoirs are quite low and not being refilled by snow in the Sierras, or by rain elsewhere.  The Central Valley is dry as a bone and our beautiful hills are brown, not green as they should be.  Yesterday, while we were at the dog park, lots of sirens went off...a fire in the hills...quickly out, thanks to our alert Fire Departments.  Today the winds are blowing.

This is (unfinished) rain cloth #2:

I decided to make small Prayers for Rain prints...to hang on trees, put in library books, give to friends, just deposit here and there...

This is a little leaf that settled on the dashboard of my car...a friend commented about how similar the shape of the raindrop is to a candle flame...for hope...for rain...

And here's Miss Gilly at the dog park, sniffing around...

xoxo, s.

    1. It's eerie...beautiful weather, but hard to appreciate, on behalf of the plants and wildlife...today some clouds...I just want to go up there and squeeze out some raindrops...

  2. maybe your lovely rain cloth will bring you some rain. we have been in drought conditions for some time and are restricted in our outside watering. we, luckily, have gotten some rain, but unfortunately, it has not rained in the right place to raise the lake levels. beautiful leaf.

    1. Glad you've had some rain...there is hope! I think I'd feel better if we did have some restrictions...the populace isn't used to being careful and needs reminding. Ach! I have to stop worrying about the weather!

  3. I love this, Suzanna -- spreading around the Prayers for Rain prints is such good work. I'll be thinking about you. And I see rain on that second cloth you made. xo

  4. Hi Suzanna, we've had four good years now but just the thought of drought is scary. And yet it will inevitably come again.
I wish you rain and sleet and snow on the mountains, water in the creeks and green growth.

    1. Dear Elizabeth, thank you so much for your encouraging wishes! There were some clouds in the sky today and the forecast is tentative for a bit of rain tomorrow...only a bit, and only maybe but every drop counts. When I moved here in the 70's there was a long stretch with no rain...there is no knowing, only hoping. So good to hear from you!

  5. I'm praying for rain too. This has been the driest winter on record in British Columbia. Our cistern is only a third full, and normally it would be overflowing.
